Travel to the Nishijin weaving district to the lovely old traditional home and garden of a 5th generation gold leaf artisan who is part of a collaborative process of applying his family’s age-old technique of applying gold, silver and platinum leaf and lacquer to Japanese washi paper. The gold paper is cut and woven with silk to create luxurious kimono obi, for which Kyoto is famous. The artist was featured in a national broadcast by NHK (Japan’s national public network) in a documentary about his impressions of Gustav Klimt’s portrait of Adele.
